Y-Wings! They drop bombs, shoot ion cannons, and are awesome. A few weeks ago I picked up the new(ish) Resistance Y-Wing to build during lockdown. This set is definitely a favorite - it has great greebling, and it features a very clever delay mechanism for dropping its bombs.

A little bit after completing the new Y-Wing, I realized that I also had this set from 1999. So I had to build it. One of the big technic struts was missing, but it turns out you can reverse-engineer this quite effectively.

Some pros and cons

New Y-wing

• It can drop bombs
• It is a little longer
• Better greebling
• More minifigs
• More pieces

Old Y-wing

• Droid faces forward
• Engines can detach (without breaking the set)
• Has two storage compartments (perfect for smuggling runs)
• Is old school cool

It is cool to see how far Lego designs have come in 21 years!
